Tissue Box Cover Tutorial (MY way)

Hello Everyone!

I've been making tissue box covers for several years now and they have become quite a good seller at my craft shows.  I actually have repeat customers who buy them every year for gift giving!   When I started making these, I used the instructions I found on Splitcoast Stamper HERE.  (If you are not a paying member of SCS, you won't be able to see the link).  But over time, I have modified it a bit and it seems to work the best for me.


This is a LONG POST but I have taken the time to photograph each step so hopefully it will make it easier for you.  I know a video would have been faster BUT I don't know how to do a video so you're stuck with photos LOL.  Hope you find this useful and helpful!

Supplies Needed:

• Box of tissues
  THREE sheets of card stock for Base & Lid
• Two 5 1/8” x 9 1/2” pieces of card stock (base) - Kleenex brand
  OR

• Two 5 1/4" x 9 1/2" pieces of card stock (base) - Puffs brand
• One 6 9/16” square piece of card stock (lid)
  
  One 12x12 sheet of Patterned Paper for decorative Panels
• Four 4 1/4” x 4” pieces of patterned paper (base layers)
• Four 4 1/2” x ¾” pieces of patterned paper (lid side layers)
• One 4 1/2” square piece of patterned paper (top layer)
  
  Additional supplies needed:
• Scoring tool
• Glue or strong double face tape
• Scissors
• Cutting dies or shape templates
• Die cutting machine
• Additional card stock, stamps, die cuts, punches and other embellishments as desired

for gluing together to create the lid
 (BUT DON'T PUT LID TOGETHER YET!!)
We will have to die cut the opening for the tissues to pop through first ...
 

DESIGNER (PATTERNED) PAPER

I have figured out over time the best way to cut my designer paper
so that I can get all my pieces out of ONE sheet of 12x12 paper.
I have created you a template below ...

TIP:  If you are using directional paper, you will have to be careful which direction your pattern is going before making your first cut.

Take note ... your first cut (left to right) is at 4 1/4" ...  your second cut is at 4 1/2" ... what is left (xxx) is not used.

Three pieces from your first cut strip ... then after cutting your LID from the second cut panel (4 1/2 x 4 1/2) you next cut will be at 4" and be sure to turn it to the 4 1/2" side and cut to 4 1/4" ... this will give you the 4th panel you need for your box.

ASSEMBLY

To adhere my lid panel and side panels, I use a good glue ...
my preference is Art Glitter Glue.  This way when we get around to die cutting
the opening on our lid, the paper will be evenly adhered.
Set this aside to dry while you put your box panels together.
 (DON'T PUT LID TOGETHER YET!!)

On my box panels, I use a strong double sided tape (I use a Scotch Tape Gun).
BUT, before adhering to my card stock panels, I have found it very beneficial to lay my decorative panels in position first.  Since these panels are only a 1/4" difference in size, it's very easy to get them going the wrong way (ask me how I know!  LOL).  Lay each piece so the longest length (4 1/4") goes left to right.

AND, be sure your 1/2" scored sides are on the same side.  This is the strip where you will tape them together to make your box.  If they are not on the same side, your decorative panels will be two on the top and two on the bottom!  NOT WHAT YOU WANT!!  LOL

Once your decorative panels are adhered, put a piece of strong 2 sided tape (I use Scor-Tape)  along those 1/2" ends.

And here's your BOX!

BOX IS DONE ... ONTO THE LID

Because I make so many of these, I have designated these dies strictly for my tissue box cover lids.  I have various other oval dies that I can use for my cards and these are actually the FIRST die sets I ever purchased.  Like a lot of us, when Spellbinder came out with these Nestabillities Squares, Rectangles, Circles & Ovals ... many of us just HAD TO HAVE THEM.  

 I have used a smaller classic oval & a little larger scallop oval to create my decorative panel for the top of the lid opening.  The 'next size up' classical oval die is used to cut the opening in the lid itself.

The card stock panel that is left from cutting your 6-9/16" lid works perfectly for die cutting your decorative oval panel.  I usually cut a couple and have them hanging around for future.
 

TIP:  The center pop out can be used for sentiment panels for your cards.

 Be sure your slightly larger oval is centered on your lid before cutting.
And, depending on the pattern of your paper, you might choose to have the oval one way or another.

Now it's time to GLUE your decorative oval around the opening in your lid.  Be sure to keep the glue closer to the outside edge of your decorative oval. 

 This is why you want to keep your glue closer to the outside edge of your decorative oval ... this also gives you a little 'play' room in case your oval cut in the lid is a little 'whompist' you can  make the adjustment with your decorative panel.

Glue your lid corners together and VIOLA!!

Your Tissue Box Cover is complete!

Now comes the fun of decorating it with flowers, butterflies, etc. depending on the theme of your paper.  During the holidays I simply add pretty Stickles around the scallops of the opening decorative panel and everyone seems quite happy with that!

I have decorated them quite simply and I've also decorated with lace, flowers & pearls!  The sky's the limit!!

Since I will be keeping this 'sample' for myself, I simply added a few little
goodies that were laying on my worktable to adorn the top.  Had a few other pieces & parts that needed colored so quickly did that and adorned the sides of my box too.  Hope you like it.

Another 2017 Craft Show Goodie . . .

Hello All!

If you follow my blog, you know I'm preparing for this Fall's Private Craft Show at one of the local Country Clubs.  This is basically the same group of ladies I see at their Spring show, so I always try to have a few new 'goodies' for them to purchase along with my usual supply of cards, tea cups & tissue box covers.  

Earlier in the week I spotted this stack of gold boxes with clear covers that I've had in my stash for a good 5 years and thought 'Now what could I do with these that would be different?'  Well, here's what I've come up with:

A holiday gift idea of 4 note cards with envelopes & 5 wrapped Hershey Milk Chocolate Nuggets. Oh yea ... and I made the cute little snowman guys too!  I spotted them on THIS YouTube video.  Easy and SO CUTE!!

Okay ... back to my gift boxes.

Here's a photo TUTORIAL for you.

Product used:
 

4 1/2 x 5 3/4 gold box with clear lid

4 - 4 x 4 envelopes

4 - 3-3/4 x 3-3/4 blank note cards (card stock cut 7 1/2" x 3/4")

2 sheets - 6 x 12 patterned paper
(These papers are actually left over pieces from last years holiday projects!
So, I'm cleaning up some scraps along the way!  HOORAY!!)
You can use 1 sheet of 12x12 patterned paper for everything to match!

Peel & Stick Felt Stickers (decoration of your choice)

Step 1:  Cut  panel for the inside of your box 6 1/4" x 4 3/8".  Score at 1", 1-1/2" and 2" and fold to create a 'mountain divider' to separate note cards from chocolates.

AFTER SOME TWEAKING:  To cover the entire bottom of your box and have a taller 'dividing' panel, cut your paper at 7 5/8 x 4 3/8 ... scoring along the long side at 1 1/2,  2 1/2 and 3 1/2.
 

Step 2:  Adhere to the bottom of your box with double face tape.  Add a strip of double face tape (I used Scor Tape) to the middle of your 'chocolate side' to keep the nuggets securely in place.

Step 3:  Use the remaining paper that you used for your box bottom 

to cut 1 card panel & 2 wrappers

card panels are: 3 -1/2"  x 3 -1/2"

wrappers are:  3" x 1" 

TIP:  In order for FIVE nuggets to fit in the box,

 you will need to alternate them top side up and bottom side up.  

So be careful in your wrapping to be sure the

wrapper 'joining' is always on the bottom of your nugget piece.

Step 4:  From your other patterned paper, cut 3 card panels each 3 - 1/2" x 3 - 1/2"

and 3 wrappers each 3" x 1"

Adhere patterned paper to your note cards and decorate as you wish.

Step 5:  Inside your box place your envelopes & note cards on the one side.

Next remove the paper cover from your Scor tape and carefully position your nuggets.

Remember to alternate them (using the different colored papers helps to remind you of this fact).  They are a tight fit but if you position them as in the photo below, keeping the 2nd one down LAST, you can squeeze them together and they will stay due to the Scor tape.

Step 6:  Put the clear lid on and decorate with ribbon, etc. to finish.

2017 Fall Craft Show Goodies + Tutorial

Happy Weekend Everyone!

The past week or so I have finally gotten serious about creating for an upcoming show I have on the 20th at the local Country Club.  It's the same group of ladies I see for both Spring & Fall shows so besides having a variety of cards available for them to thumb through, I try to have a few little extra goodies.  They are always looking for the tissue box covers and tea cups I have for sale and they are usually on the look out for some smaller gift giving goodies.

Here is the EXTRA little goodies I've come up with this year (so far):

Chocolates

Both in everyday designs and holiday designs.

I spotted the original tutorial for the box HERE then expanded on her idea and turned it into a 'window box'.

Here's the details if you'd like to try it yourself!

 

Are you like me and save that clear packaging some dies come in?  Well if you do, you're in luck because they make fabulous WINDOWS!!

I use a pair of kitchen (heavy duty) shears to cut off the thick edged sides, then square them up on my cutter.  That way,  when you need 'windows' (works great for shaker cards too), you simply have to cut them to the size you need ... VIOLA!

I used 1/8" Scor Tape around the edges to adhere my windows to my boxes. 

 This small rectangle box will hold 3 tea lights or 5 Hershey Nuggets (if you position every other one upside down).  

TIP:  You can get THREE boxes out of one 12x12 sheet of heavier grade designer paper.  I've used double sided paper since it is usually a heavier grade.

1.  Cut a piece of cardstock 3 1/2" x 12".  Score on all four sides at 1".  Score on the long side at 5 1/2" and 6 1/2".  

 2.  Before folding, cutting & assembling my box, I created my window.  To do that,  I cut a scrap piece of white card stock 3 1/4" x 1" and used that as my window template.  Using a pencil, I outlines my template and cut out the opening with my Fiskars swivel craft knife.

3.  After cutting out the window, I adhered my clear window panel ( which was cut at 4" x 1 7/16")  to the 'INSIDE' of the lid end of your box.  NOW you can fold on the score lines, cut up to the score lines to create the gluing tabs and assemble your box.

Decorate as you wish!

You can make a tag, or simply use pretty ribbon and a charm as I have.  Your choices are endless ... be creative!   In fact, for the everyday tea light boxes, I used some fancy buttons I had in my stash.

Makes a great little gift for that someone special you don't want to spend a lot of money on but want them to know they hold a special place in your heart!  After all, it shouldn't be about how much you spend on a person ... it's the fact that you just want to show them that you care!!

Tea Bag Holder Cards w/Tutorial

HAPPY SUNDAY ALL!

Yesterday I mentioned I was working on some tea bag holder cards for the local Tea Shoppe (Marge's Place At Portage Lakes LLC) and thought you might like to see some of them and how I made them.  Here ya go ...

Now here's how you make them . . .

You will need:
1 sheet of 12 x 12 card stock (makes 2)
Patterned Paper, sentiments & embellishments of your choice
Scor Tape

*  Cut your 12 x 12 card stock at 7"

*  Turn and cut your 7" x 12" in half (6")

*  Score each panel (on the 7" side) at 3 3/8" & 3 5/8" giving you a 1/4" spine.

*  Turn and score at 1 1/2" ... giving you the pockets for your tea bags.

* Fold as shown.  Use 1/8" scor tape (or fine line of white glue) on ends and middle then fold UP to create your pockets.

 

Now comes the fun part ... decorating!

Measurements you will need:

Front Panel - 3 1/8" x 4 1/4"

Inside Pocket Panels (2) - 3 1/8" x 1 1/4"

Ribbon - Approx. 20"  (narrow, easy to tie ribbon is best)

Here's a trick I use for attaching my ribbon evenly ...
Using my Darice Cutting Mat (you can use whatever you have that shows measurement on both side and bottom).  I lay my card face down along the bottom line then run a piece of thin scor tape across from side to side along one of the measurement lines.
Fold my 20" piece of ribbon in half, then laying that center mark of the ribbon in the center of my card first and smoothing out from side to side.
That way, I know the ribbons will batch up on the sides for tying.  As well as being level across the front of my card.
 

 NOW you can attach your sentiment and any addition embellishments you prefer.
